The two count fundamentally different things. Air freight counts weight, but converts volume into a weight figure and compares the two. Sea freight counts volume, and applies a minimum before it starts. Understand these two bases and you can reason through every scenario below on your own.
- Air freight: the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (length x width x height divided by 5000), with a 1 kg minimum. The smaller the weight and volume, the better the fit.
- Sea freight: priced on volume (CBM, minimum 0.5 CBM). Large and bulky suits it, subject to that 0.5 CBM floor.

Is air freight worth it for small, high-value items?
For anything small, light, valuable and needed soon, air freight is barely a decision, because the volumetric weight usually comes in under a kilogram, meaning you ship at the minimum charge. What deserves attention instead is not sending a single item on its own, since the minimum charge is only good value once you use it up.
Scenario 1: a small box of cosmetics (small, light, high-value, urgent)
- Box 20 x 15 x 10 cm, actual weight 1 kg.
- Air volumetric weight = 20 x 15 x 10 divided by 5000 = 0.6 kg, under 1 kg, so billed at the 1 kg minimum.
- Volume is only 0.003 CBM, nowhere near the 0.5 CBM sea freight floor.
- Decision: air freight. Small, high-value and urgent, with West Malaysia at about 5 days at the fastest, and low volume makes air the cheapest choice.
Scenario 5: one small electronics accessory (very small, very light)
- Box 15 x 10 x 5 cm, actual weight 0.3 kg.
- Air volumetric weight = 15 x 10 x 5 divided by 5000 = 0.15 kg, so the actual 0.3 kg is greater, but still under a kilogram and billed at the same 1 kg minimum.
- Volume of just 0.00075 CBM rules sea freight out entirely.
- Decision: air freight, but not on its own. A 0.3 kg item and a 0.9 kg item are both billed at 1 kg, so putting several small things in one carton uses that minimum charge properly.
Both scenarios lead to the same conclusion: the 1 kg minimum is a floor price, so build up close to a kilogram before sending.
Why does one box of bulky clothing get expensive by air?
Because air freight does not just read the number on the scale. It converts volume into a weight figure and bills the greater of the two. Clothing, bedding and paper goods take up space without weighing much, so their volumetric weight often runs several times the actual weight and the bill inflates accordingly.
Scenario 2: one box of clothes (bulky, light)
- Box 50 x 40 x 30 cm, actual weight 3 kg.
- Air volumetric weight = 50 x 40 x 30 divided by 5000 = 12 kg, so billed at 12 kg, four times the actual weight.
- Sea volume is 0.06 CBM, and one box alone falls short of 0.5 CBM.
- Decision: a small urgent quantity can go by air, though it is pricey. With several boxes of clothing consolidated, sea freight by CBM is usually far cheaper.
Scenario 6: one box of nappies or household paper goods (large, bulky)
- Box 60 x 40 x 40 cm, actual weight 5 kg.
- Air volumetric weight = 60 x 40 x 40 divided by 5000 = 19.2 kg, billed at 19.2 kg, close to four times the actual weight.
- Sea volume = 0.6 x 0.4 x 0.4 = 0.096 CBM, again short of 0.5 CBM on its own.
- Decision: this is the worst possible box to fly. Build up to five or six of them, clear the 0.5 CBM floor, and the unit cost by sea drops sharply.
The rule for bulky items: work out the volumetric weight first, and if it is more than double the actual weight, seriously consider building volume for sea freight.
How much does bulk stock save by sea?
For bulk stock the question is not what one box costs, it is whether you have used up the sea freight minimum. Once the accumulated volume clears 0.5 CBM, pricing sits entirely on the volume side and the unit cost falls well below air freight.
Scenario 3: bulk stock (several boxes of clothing plus household goods, high volume, no rush)
- Say you accumulate 8 boxes, about 0.6 CBM in total, 30 kg in total.
- Air freight: the combined volumetric weight could reach the hundred-kilogram range, so freight is high.
- Sea freight: 0.6 CBM already clears the minimum, and priced on CBM the unit cost is usually far below air freight.
- Decision: sea freight. Bulk, bulky, non-urgent stock is cheapest by sea, arriving in about 30 days.
There is a comparison here that people miss. With the same 8 boxes, air freight counts each carton's volumetric weight separately and adds them up, while sea freight looks only at the total volume of the batch, so the more tightly the boxes are packed and stacked, the better you do. Saving money on bulk stock is therefore not just about choosing sea freight, it is also about filling the boxes and stacking them densely.
How do you price heavy but compact items correctly?
Dense goods are the only category where actual weight exceeds volumetric weight, and there air freight bills the actual weight, which works out reasonably. The method is the same as always: calculate both figures, use whichever is larger, and never go on gut feel.
Scenario 4: small appliances and heavy-but-compact goods (heavy, moderate volume)
- For example 30 x 25 x 20 cm, actual weight 6 kg.
- Air volumetric weight = 30 x 25 x 20 divided by 5000 = 3 kg, so the actual 6 kg is greater and it is billed at 6 kg (with heavy but non-bulky goods, the volumetric weight comes in below the actual weight).
- Decision: sending it urgently by air at actual weight is reasonable, while bulk and non-urgent shipments are cheaper by sea.

The effect of compression can be checked against the same divisor. If the clothing box in scenario 2 is repacked with the clothes rolled and the retail boxes removed, going from 50 x 40 x 30 down to 50 x 40 x 20, the volumetric weight falls from 12 kg to 50 x 40 x 20 divided by 5000 = 8 kg. The same clothes, 10 cm less height, and a third off the chargeable weight.

A 30 x 25 x 20 cm small appliance weighing 6 kg has a volumetric weight of only 3 kg, below its actual weight, making it one of the few categories billed on actual weight and safe from volumetric inflation.
