Can chemicals be sent to Malaysia?
The test is whether the product counts as dangerous goods for air transport, not whether it contains chemical ingredients. Shampoo and body lotion are chemically formulated products too, and they ship normally. Bleach containing sodium hypochlorite is a corrosive substance, and most routes will not carry it. Everything remains subject to the route rules at the time of shipping.
Dangerous goods classification looks at the properties of the substance, not at what it is used for or how big the container is. The same ingredient in a smaller bottle behaves in exactly the same way. "It is only a small bottle, it must be fine" is the single most common misjudgement, and a frequent reason for an entire box being held.
Before you ship, check the product against four properties.
- Will it burn? Products containing alcohol, acetone, toluene or similar solvents are flammable liquids.
- Will it corrode? Strong acids, strong alkalis and bleach containing sodium hypochlorite attack metal and skin.
- Will it feed a fire? Oxidising agents such as hydrogen peroxide and sodium percarbonate make a fire burn harder.
- Is it toxic? Pesticides, concentrated insecticides and preparations containing heavy metals are toxic substances.

What are the classes of dangerous goods for air transport?
International air transport divides dangerous goods into nine classes, covering explosives, gases, flammable liquids, flammable solids, oxidising substances and organic peroxides, toxic and infectious substances, radioactive material, corrosive substances, and miscellaneous dangerous goods. Personal consolidation runs into only a few of those classes.

Can household cleaners be sent, and how do you read the ingredients?
Two products both called cleaner can be completely different things: a pH-neutral washing-up liquid and a bleach containing sodium hypochlorite have nothing in common. The assessment comes back to the ingredient list on the bottle, and whether it contains strong acid, strong alkali, sodium hypochlorite or volatile solvents, not to which aisle of the shop it sits in.
How common household cleaning products break down:
- Neutral washing-up liquid, laundry liquid, laundry pods. Mostly ordinary liquids. The constraints are leak-proof packing and weight, not dangerous goods status.
- Bleach and chlorine-based cleaners. These contain sodium hypochlorite, are corrosive, and mostly cannot fly.
- Drain cleaner and heavy-duty descaler. Often contain strong alkali or strong acid, so they are prohibited.
- Bathroom mould removal sprays. These have two problems at once: corrosivity and a pressurised container.
- Alcohol sprays and hand sanitiser. High-concentration alcohol makes these flammable liquids.
- Dehumidifier boxes and calcium chloride refills. Acceptable in most cases, solid but heavy, so watch the freight cost.
- Washing powder and oxygen bleach powder. Powdered and possibly containing an oxidising agent, so the ingredients need checking individually.
A decanted bottle with no ingredient label is the most awkward situation of all. A liquid whose contents cannot be evidenced can only be handled conservatively at inspection. If you do need to send something, keep the original bottle and label, and do not transfer it to another container to save space.
Why can paint, glue and spray paint rarely be sent?
What these products have in common is volatile organic solvent, which makes them flammable liquids by nature. Paint, spray paint, model paint, contact adhesive and thinner nearly all rely on solvent to stay fluid and to bond, and the vapour that solvent gives off inside a sealed cargo hold is exactly the risk air transport worries about most.

When you are shipping craft or model-making materials, choose water-based, solid or solvent-free alternatives first: water-based paints, solid glue and hot melt glue sticks are far more likely to be accepted than solvent-based products. Can laboratory and industrial chemicals go by consolidation?
No. Laboratory reagents, industrial raw materials and chemical feedstock require a specialist dangerous goods transport process and sit outside the scope of personal consolidation. Goods of this kind need dedicated packaging, dangerous goods labelling, transport documentation and trained personnel to handle them, none of which is compatible with the consolidated-box model.
Typical items that fall outside consolidation:
- Laboratory reagents and reference standards. However small the volume, they need the formal dangerous goods process.
- Industrial raw materials. Resins, hardeners, catalysts, electroplating solutions.
- Agricultural inputs. Concentrated pesticides, herbicides, fumigants.
- Gas cylinders and gas canisters. Including small camping gas canisters and carbon dioxide cylinders.
- Preparations containing mercury, lead or other heavy metals. These also engage environmental and health controls.
- Unlabelled chemicals or chemicals of unknown origin. What cannot be identified cannot be accepted.
If you genuinely need to import these, use a freight company qualified to carry dangerous goods and clear them through formal customs procedures, rather than splitting them into small parcels mixed into consolidation. How do you read a safety data sheet?
A safety data sheet is the official identity document of a chemical product, recording its composition, its hazards, emergency handling and transport information, and it is the most direct basis for deciding whether something can be shipped. Most manufacturers publish one on their website, and you can also ask the seller for it.
When you read one, go straight to a few sections.
- Hazard identification. Does it list flammable, corrosive, oxidising or toxic hazard classes?
- Composition and concentration. What is the main solvent or active ingredient, and at what concentration?
- Physical and chemical properties. Flash point is the key indicator, and the lower the figure, the more easily the product ignites.
- Transport information. This section states directly whether the substance is a regulated dangerous good and which class it belongs to.
If the transport information section identifies it as a dangerous good, there is nothing left to deliberate. Nail polish and nail polish remover contain flammable solvent, which makes them flammable liquids, and most routes will not accept them however small the bottle is. Can laundry liquid and washing-up liquid be sent?
Neutral formulations of laundry liquid and washing-up liquid are ordinary liquids in most cases and can be sent, but watch two things. First, the weight of a liquid feeds straight into the freight cost. Second, the packing has to be leak-proof: seal the neck with film and then put the bottle inside a zip-lock bag. Products marketed as heavy-duty descalers or as containing chlorine need their ingredients checked separately.
What if the product description does not list the ingredients?
Ask the seller for an ingredient list or a safety data sheet first, which most brands can produce. If nothing can be found at all, the item can only be handled conservatively at the consolidation end, which means we would advise against sending it. What happens if chemicals are found?
Dangerous goods usually cannot be returned and are mostly destroyed where they are, with no refund of freight.
