Cold chain logistics means holding goods within a defined temperature range across the entire journey - origin, storage, transport and final delivery. The words that matter are "entire journey": if any single link falls outside the range, everything done before and after it loses its value.   2. Consider the transit time: the same chocolate needs different handling over three days by air than over four weeks by sea.
  3. Consider the destination climate: Malaysia and Singapore are hot year-round, so something that survives a Taiwanese winter may not survive arrival.

What is a cold chain break and why is it worse than a warm parcel?

A cold chain break is a temporary excursion outside the set range - frozen goods thawing during transhipment and then refreezing, for example. The danger is that it is invisible: refrozen goods look identical to properly frozen ones, but microorganisms multiplied during the thaw. The food safety risk is considerably higher than for goods that ran slightly warm but never thawed.

Breaks typically occur at these moments:

  • Waiting at the loading dock: goods sit at ambient temperature away from the chiller.
  • Transhipment: changing vehicles, changing warehouses, or customs inspection all require opening or waiting.
  • Final delivery: the recipient is out and the parcel sits in a vehicle or at the door.
  • Insufficient coolant: transit time was underestimated and the packs expired before arrival.

Should you use gel packs, ice packs or dry ice?

An individual sender essentially cannot satisfy these conditions.

Taking Malaysia as an example, importing meat and dairy generally involves:

  • A per-consignment import permit: obtained before the goods leave the exporting country, not applied for on arrival.
  • Source establishment registration: the exporting facility must be recognised by the importing authority.
  • A veterinary health certificate: issued by the official veterinary body of the exporting country.

Which foods travel safely without a cold chain?

Shelf-stable, sealed processed foods with full ingredient labelling consolidate normally in most cases. Will chocolate melt on the way to Malaysia?

It may. Malaysia is hot year-round, and chocolate softens or deforms if it spends long periods exposed during transport and final delivery. Air freight is shorter and carries less risk; sea freight takes weeks, and melting is likely in the warmer months. If you must send it, choose a heat-resistant formulation, insulate the packaging well, and accept that the appearance may change.

Do supplements and probiotics need refrigeration?

Check the label. Most tablet and capsule supplements are ambient-stable and consolidate normally. Some live-culture probiotics are labelled for refrigeration, and viable counts in those products may fall during cross-border transit. Can frozen food travel by sea freight?
