Malaysian addresses are written in the opposite order to Taiwanese ones: they run from the smallest unit (house number and street) up to the largest (postcode and state), and the five-digit postcode must match the state it belongs to. Get that pairing wrong and the parcel is mis-sorted or fails to deliver outright. What is the correct format for a Malaysian address?

The standard order is: house number and street, then the housing estate or garden name, then the postcode with the city, then the state, then the country. That is the exact reverse of the Taiwanese habit of working from largest to smallest, so translating a Chinese-language address line by line leaves local couriers struggling to read it. Write the whole address in English or Malay, never in Chinese characters.

What each element means:

• Jalan: Malay for road or street, the equivalent of Road or Street in English.
• Lorong: a lane, or a smaller road running off a Jalan.
• Taman: a residential estate or garden neighbourhood, an extremely common unit in Malaysian addresses.
• Bandar: a town or township.
• No.: the house or lot number.

Do not leave the estate name out. Malaysia has a great many identically named streets spread across different neighbourhoods, and a Jalan with no Taman to anchor it may leave the courier unable to identify the right location.

How do postcodes work, and how do they relate to the state?

Malaysian postcodes are five digits, the first two of which correspond to a geographic zone, and each zone has a fixed relationship with a particular state. A postcode that does not match the state is the single most common addressing error. The parcel gets sorted to the wrong regional hub, which costs several days at best and ends in a return at worst.

Which states does Malaysia have, and how are East and West Malaysia divided?

Malaysia has thirteen states and three federal territories, divided by the South China Sea into West Malaysia (the peninsula) and East Malaysia (on the island of Borneo). Rates and transit times differ noticeably between the two halves, because East Malaysia requires an additional sea or air leg, so it matters which side the delivery address sits on.

How should the recipient phone number be written?

Malaysian mobile numbers begin with 01 locally, and in international format you drop the leading zero and add country code 60. The phone number is the only channel the last-mile courier has for reaching the recipient before a delivery attempt, so an incorrect one throws away that attempt and ranks among the leading causes of failed delivery.

Points to watch when filling this field in:

• Drop the leading zero once you add the country code: 012-3456789 becomes +6012-3456789, not +60012....
• Check the digit count: a Malaysian mobile number including the country code normally runs to eleven or twelve digits.
• Give a number that will actually be answered: use the recipient's own everyday number, not the Taiwanese sender's.
• A second number helps: where the system allows a backup contact, adding one lowers the failed-delivery rate.

What happens if the address is wrong?

At best you lose several days; at worst the parcel is returned and extra charges follow. The consequences scale with the severity of the error. A wrong postcode sends the parcel on a detour through the wrong hub, incomplete street details leave the courier unable to find the door, and a wrong phone number means no contact at all. After repeated failed attempts, the parcel goes back to the transit hub.

The possible outcomes, in order of severity:

1. Correctable: update the address before the parcel enters last-mile delivery, and it can usually be handled.
2. Redelivery: rescheduled after a failed attempt, potentially with a second delivery charge.
3. Returned to the transit hub: held after repeated failures, requiring contact to resolve and possibly incurring storage fees.
4. Returned to origin: undeliverable and unclaimed, ending in a return or disposal.

Act on a mistake as early as you can. How do you write an address for an apartment or office tower?

The unit number belongs on its own line at the very top, normally in a floor-unit format. Apartments and commercial towers are densely built in Malaysia, and an address missing the unit number effectively stops at the lobby door, leaving the courier with no way to complete delivery.

An apartment address is laid out like this:

Common unit number formats:

Office towers need the company name and the recipient's name as well, and it is worth checking whether the building runs a central mailroom. Can the address be written in Chinese?

Not advisable. Malaysian delivery staff work in Malay and English, and an address in Chinese characters cannot be read. Even in predominantly Chinese neighbourhoods, the official address system is registered in English and Malay. Ask the recipient for the full English version, including house number, street, estate, postcode and state.

Can a postcode be written with only four digits?

No. Malaysian postcodes are always five digits. A postcode that begins with 0, such as 01000 in Perlis, can have its leading zero stripped automatically by some systems, so check that all five digits have survived. Too few digits causes a sorting error.

What happens if nobody is home?

The last-mile courier will usually try to contact the recipient to arrange a second attempt, or leave the parcel at a designated point according to local practice. Is the address format the same in East and West Malaysia?

The format is identical, smallest unit first in both. The differences are the postcode ranges, with Sabah starting at 88000 and Sarawak at 93000, and the rates and transit times, since Borneo requires an extra leg. Is the format the same for addresses in Singapore?
