Volumetric weight is length x width x height in centimetres divided by a fixed divisor, and which divisor applies is set by the carrier and the lane, with 5000 and 6000 both common across the industry. These examples use the air volumetric formula. Sea is charged on actual CBM, with a 0.5 CBM minimum and no rounding.

Example one: light but bulky

Sending a pillow:

  • Dimensions: 60cm x 50cm x 30cm
  • Actual weight: 0.8 KG
  • Volumetric weight: 60 x 50 x 30 / 5000 = 18 KG
  • Chargeable weight: 18 KG (volumetric)

Volumetric weight is more than twenty times the actual weight here, so a smaller carton or compression packing produces the biggest saving available on this kind of item.

Example two: heavy but compact

Sending a thick, heavy book:

  • Dimensions: 25cm x 20cm x 5cm
  • Actual weight: 3 KG
  • Volumetric weight: 25 x 20 x 5 / 5000 = 0.5 KG
  • Chargeable weight: 3 KG (actual)

Books, hardware and bottled goods are dense, so volumetric weight almost never wins and shrinking the packaging saves nothing on freight. For these items the packing effort should go into protection instead.

Example three: ordinary clothing

Sending garments:

  • Dimensions: 40cm x 30cm x 20cm
  • Actual weight: 2 KG
  • Volumetric weight: 40 x 30 x 20 / 5000 = 4.8 KG
  • Chargeable weight: 5 KG (4.8 KG volumetric, rounded up)

This example shows the rounding rule at work: the calculation gives 4.8 but the charge is 5. Reducing any one dimension enough to bring the result below the next whole kilogramme removes a charging band. Taken together, the three examples make the same point. You cannot estimate freight without both the dimensions and the weight in front of you.

Why is sea freight charged by CBM, and how does that differ from air?

Sea freight is charged by volume in cubic metres, calculated as length x width x height in centimetres divided by 1,000,000, with a minimum of 0.5 CBM, taken at actual volume with no rounding. Air freight cares about an equivalent weight derived from space, whereas sea freight cares directly about how much of the container the goods occupy.

One caveat: sea freight has that 0.5 CBM floor, so a very small shipment is not cheaper by sea, because anything below the floor is still charged at 0.5 CBM. For small volumes the saving comes from merging shipments, not from switching method.

Where do freight estimates most often go wrong?

Estimates rarely fail because the formula was applied incorrectly. They fail because something was measured wrongly or left out. The four usual causes are measuring the inner box rather than the outer carton, forgetting how much the cushioning adds, taking the wrong edge on an irregular item, and counting only the freight itself.

A practical checklist:

  1. Measure the outside of the carton, including tape, handles and any protruding corners, rather than the product itself.
  2. Measure again after packing, since bubble wrap and filler regularly push a carton up a size, which is where most estimate gaps come from.
  3. Take the longest edge on irregular items, counting protruding handles, wheels and legs, and use the longest, widest and tallest outer points.
  4. Re-estimate once items are merged, using the dimensions of the new outer carton rather than adding up the individual volumetric weights.
  5. List everything beyond the freight itself, such as remote area surcharges, clearance related charges and reinforced packing, which may sit outside the freight quote.
