How is the freight calculated?

You are charged on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is length x width x height in cm divided by 5000, and anything under 3kg is charged as 3kg. Dense goods are governed by actual weight and bulky goods by volume, so tight packing is what stops volume inflating the bill.
