Shipping from the USA to Taiwan: Supplements, 3C and Sneakers via LA and Portland
Shopping in the US and getting the goods to Taiwan is easiest through consolidation: send your purchases to a US warehouse, let several orders gather there, then move the whole batch to Taiwan by tax-inclusive air freight, with Taiwan import tax already covered by the freight so there is nothing to pay on delivery. Our US lane runs two receiving warehouses, Los Angeles (LA) and Portland, and they differ in dispatch days and in how weight is charged.

Why use consolidation to ship from the USA to Taiwan?
Most US retail sites deliver only within the United States, and the few that do offer international shipping often quote freight and tax that come close to the value of the goods themselves. Consolidation solves that by receiving your orders at a US warehouse first, then exporting them together in one batch so the fixed costs are spread across everything you bought.
The difference shows up in three places:
- Lower freight: five orders shipped separately means paying five minimum charges and five sets of handling. Combined into one carton, you pay once.
- Less tax admin: the US lane runs mainly on tax-inclusive air freight, so Taiwan import tax is already inside the freight. Nothing is collected at the door and you do not have to file anything yourself.
- Less risk: parcels land in the warehouse first, so you can confirm the contents and the condition of the outer carton before deciding what goes out together. That is far more controllable than direct overseas shipping.

LA or Portland: which warehouse should you use?
The two warehouses differ on dispatch days and on the finer points of charging: Los Angeles dispatches on Tuesday and Friday, and anything under 1kg is charged as 1kg. Portland dispatches on Wednesday, and volumetric weight is length x width x height in cm divided by 6000. Picking the one that matches where your store ships from is usually the smoothest route.
| Comparison | Los Angeles (LA) | Portland |
|---|---|---|
| Dispatch frequency | Tuesday and Friday | Wednesday |
| Minimum charge rule | Under 1kg charged as 1kg | Greater of actual and volumetric |
| Volumetric formula | Per your quote | L x W x H in cm divided by 6000 |
| Sales tax on purchases | Per local rules | Oregon, where Portland sits, has no sales tax |
| Best suited to | Two dispatch days, last-minute top-ups | Planned bulk buying |
Work through the choice in this order:
- Look at where the store ships from. Goods dispatched from the west coast reach either warehouse quickly; east coast dispatch means allowing extra days for the US domestic leg.
- Look at the dispatch day. LA has two departures a week, which is easier to catch when you add something at the last minute. Portland has one, which suits a planned batch.
- Look at sales tax. Checking out in a state with no sales tax can save more than the difference in freight between the two warehouses.
If you are unsure, tell us the items, the stores and roughly when you plan to buy when you request a quote, and we will match you to a warehouse.
How is the freight calculated?
Air consolidation is charged on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. For Portland, volumetric weight is length x width x height in cm divided by 6000. LA additionally applies the rule that anything under 1kg is charged as 1kg. Dense goods are governed by actual weight and bulky goods by volume, so you need both numbers before you know the real chargeable weight.
Working an example straight from the Portland divisor of 6000:
- A carton of 40 x 30 x 20 cm has a volume of 24,000 cubic centimetres, so volumetric weight is 24000 divided by 6000, which is 4 kg.
- If that carton holds supplements weighing 6 kg, the greater figure applies and you are charged on 6 kg.
- If the same carton holds only two pairs of sneakers weighing 2.5 kg, you are still charged on 4 kg, which means paying for 1.5 kg of air.
The lesson is blunt: the emptier the box, the worse the deal. Repacking sneakers into a snugger carton, compressing clothing and removing surplus void fill all pull volumetric weight back down towards actual weight. For the full method see volumetric weight explained, and for estimating before you ship see how to estimate parcel weight.
How do the heavy-cargo tiers actually save money?
The US lane has four heavy-cargo tiers at 21kg, 45kg, 100kg and 300kg, and the higher the tier you land in, the better the per-kilo rate. Shipping little and often keeps you permanently in the most expensive band, whereas gathering everything into one batch is what pulls the average rate down.
There are three practical ways to build volume:
- Buy in one go during sale season. Black Friday and back-to-school orders arrive at the warehouse at similar times, which naturally forms a batch.
- Share a batch with friends. One consignee keeps the billing simple. Agree who owns which items and what each weighs before you split the cost.
- Widen the consolidation window. Park the items you are not waiting on, and wait for the heavy ones to arrive rather than despatching a batch for the sake of one light parcel.
The precondition is that you were going to buy the goods anyway. Buying things you do not need in order to cross a tier rarely recovers the extra spend through a better per-kilo rate. For more on this, see how to save on consolidated shipping.
Which US products are worth shipping to Taiwan?
Dense, high value goods that are hard to find in Taiwan or noticeably cheaper in the US are the strongest candidates. Supplements and 3C accessories are the classic examples. Bulky categories such as sneakers and clothing need a volumetric check first, or the freight can eat the saving.
| Category | Suitability | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Supplements | High | Ingredients and quantities must meet Taiwan import rules; keep packaging and labelling intact |
| 3C accessories | High | Items with lithium batteries and power banks are restricted, so confirm first |
| Sneakers and streetwear | Medium | Shoe boxes take up volume and lift chargeable weight in quantity |
| Designer goods | Medium to high | Big sale-season savings, but arrange declaration and cover properly |
| Baby products | Medium | Follow import rules; some items carry labelling requirements |
Goods containing lithium batteries and power banks are restricted, and supplement ingredients and high value items need care at declaration. Whether a specific item can travel is confirmed at quoting stage, and the battery rules are covered in lithium battery shipping rules.
Taiwan's import rules change with policy, so check the current requirements published by Taiwan Customs and the relevant authorities before you buy, and ask us about anything you are unsure of first.
What does the process look like, step by step?
From checkout to doorstep there are four steps: get a quote and a warehouse, shop using that warehouse address, consolidate on arrival, then despatch, clear and deliver. Quoting before you shop is the least painful order on this lane, because the warehouse and the charging method affect how much you buy and how you buy it.
- Ask for a quote first. Request a quote with the items, estimated weight and dimensions, and when you would like delivery. We will recommend a receiving warehouse and price it.
- Shop and use the warehouse address. At US checkout, enter the assigned LA or Portland consolidation warehouse as the delivery address. We provide it after quoting.
- Consolidate on arrival. As orders land, they are combined into one shipment, with heavy items grouped to reach a better tier.
- Despatch and delivery. Once you confirm, the batch goes out on that warehouse's dispatch day, clears customs on arrival in Taiwan and is delivered to your door.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I pay extra tax when shipping from the USA to Taiwan?
The US lane runs mainly on tax-inclusive air freight, so Taiwan import tax is already included in the freight and nothing is collected on delivery. If an item needs a separate application or falls under special rules, we will tell you at quoting stage. Actual import requirements follow the rules currently published by Taiwan Customs.
Can I use the LA and Portland warehouses at the same time?
Yes, but a single shipment has to consist of goods from one warehouse. If you have parcels in both, they go out as two batches, and the minimum charge rule and the heavy-cargo tiers are applied to each batch separately. To reach a tier, keep one round of buying in one warehouse.
Does the 1kg minimum apply to every single parcel?
At LA the minimum applies to the chargeable weight of the despatched batch, not to each parcel individually. That is one of the reasons consolidation pays: several small items packed into one carton only have to cross the threshold once.
Is it a problem to ship sneakers and 3C electronics together?
Normally they can travel in the same batch, provided they are packed separately and labelled clearly. Battery-bearing 3C items are restricted and must be confirmed when you request a quote. Sneaker boxes are bulky, so pairing them with dense goods keeps the batch's volumetric weight and actual weight close together.
Can I track a parcel from the USA to Taiwan?
Yes. Once the batch is despatched you get a way to check status, covering departure from the US warehouse, clearance on arrival in Taiwan and final delivery. If the status stops updating for a long stretch, it is usually sitting at clearance or a transit point, and contacting support is the fastest way to have it traced.
Next step: get a quote, then pick a warehouse
Getting US supplements, 3C, sneakers and designer goods back to Taiwan comes down to three things: choose the right warehouse (LA on Tuesday and Friday, Portland on Wednesday), keep volumetric weight close to actual weight, and consolidate enough to reach a heavy-cargo tier.
When you are ready, request a quote with your items, weights and dimensions, and we will come back with a recommended warehouse and a price. If you would rather compare other origins first, return to the import-to-Taiwan overview.
