Glass bottles in consolidated shipping usually break from compression or vibration, not impact. In a stacked container the bottom layer carries everything above it, and long-haul transport vibrates continuously for tens of hours. Neither force is as dramatic as a drop, but together they cause most breakages. So good packing is not about padding thickly - it is about keeping bottles from touching each other, choosing a box that resists crushing, and leak-proofing the cap first.

Why do glass bottles break in transit?

Three forces, each doing different damage.

Compression, the most common. Boxes are stacked in containers and aircraft holds, and the bottom layer carries all the weight above. Once the outer box deforms, the load transfers straight to the glass. This is why bottles wrapped in plenty of bubble wrap still break - bubble wrap absorbs impact, not sustained pressure.

Vibration. Long-haul transport vibrates for tens of hours. If two bottles touch even slightly, they rub and knock until a crack forms in the body or neck. Most "cracked but not shattered on arrival" cases come from this.

Temperature change. Cargo holds and ground temperatures differ widely, and glass expands and contracts at a different rate from its contents. Bottles with minor flaws or internal stress are where those cracks start.

Once you understand these three, the strategy is clear: a crush-resistant box, no bottle-to-bottle contact, and a cap treated as if it will leak.

How do you leak-proof the cap?

Assume it will leak, then pack accordingly. A broken bottle costs you one bottle; a leak can ruin the whole box, especially with soy sauce or other coloured, strongly scented liquids.

Steps:

  1. Check the cap is tight, but do not force it - overtightening can distort a plastic cap
  2. Seal the mouth: unscrew the cap, lay a sheet of cling film over the opening and screw it back on, or tape around the joint between cap and neck
  3. Put the whole bottle in a zip bag, press the air out and seal - this is the critical layer, since a break then leaks only into the bag
  4. Leave headroom: a bottle filled to the brim has nowhere for pressure to go when temperature changes

How much wrapping does each bottle need?

Every bottle individually, without exception. Two bottles sharing one layer of wrapping means nothing separates them.

In order:

  • At least two turns of bubble wrap, bubbles facing inward so it conforms to the bottle
  • Reinforce the neck and shoulder - the thinnest glass and the usual break point
  • Add a layer at the base, since stacking pressure comes from below
  • Tape to secure but do not compress - wrapping needs room to deform to absorb anything

Without bubble wrap, clothing and towels work well and double as goods you are shipping anyway - a common and sensible move in consolidated shipping. Avoid newspaper directly against bottles; ink can transfer onto labels.

How do you separate multiple bottles?

Bottles need physical separation, not just their own wrapping pressed together.

Stand bottles upright, never on their side. Lying down puts stacking pressure on the bottle wall, which is far weaker than the base. After packing, shake the box gently - any sound or movement means voids are not filled and you should add more.

Choosing and sealing the outer box

Since compression is the main cause, the box is your first line of defence.

  • Use double-wall corrugated board, not single-wall or a soft, much-reused box
  • Do not use an oversized box: more void space is harder to fill and the box crushes more easily
  • Cushion all six sides, including top and bottom - most people fill around the sides and forget that stacking pressure comes from above and below
  • Heavy items low, light items high
  • Seal in an H pattern across both flap seams and the side edges, not just one strip down the middle

A "fragile" label helps but is not a protective measure - consolidated freight is handled in bulk and a label cannot guarantee special treatment at every stage. What actually protects the goods is the structure inside the box.

How much does over-padding cost you?

This is the side of glass packing people miss: thicker padding means a bigger box, which means higher volumetric weight.

Air freight charges the greater of actual and volumetric weight (L x W x H / 5000). Glass bottles are heavy, so actual weight usually wins - but if you inflate the box for protection, volumetric weight can overtake it and push the shipment up a tier.

For example, six bottles of soy sauce might fit a 40 x 30 x 25 cm box at 6 kg volumetric; in an oversized 50 x 40 x 35 cm box that becomes 14 kg - eight kilos more, with not one extra bottle inside.

Q: Do I need a proper wine divider box?

No, but bottles do need physical separation. Cross-slotted dividers cut from corrugated card come close to the same result at almost no cost.

Q: Can I use clothes as cushioning?

Yes, and it is common in consolidated shipping - the clothes are goods you are shipping anyway, so they add no extra space or weight. Just make sure they fill the voids so nothing shifts.

Q: Upright or on their side?

Upright. The bottle wall is far weaker than the base under stacking pressure.

Q: Does a fragile label make it safe?

It helps but does not replace packing. Consolidated freight is handled in bulk; what protects the goods is separation, six-sided cushioning and a crush-resistant box.

Q: Can I decant into plastic bottles instead?

Where the contents allow, this is the single most effective move - it cuts breakage risk to near zero and makes the box easier to size. Two caveats: decanting removes the original labelling, so you must describe the goods clearly on the declaration yourself; and some contents (essential oils, high-strength alcohol, strong acidic or alkaline cleaners) attack ordinary plastics, so check material compatibility first.

Q: Can I claim if a bottle breaks?
